A Day of Discovery: Exploring Science City with My Toddler

Updated: Oct 21

As a parent, it's natural to want to provide enriching experiences for your child, but sometimes it's hard to know if they're ready for certain activities. That was certainly the case for me when I decided to take my 1.5-year-old daughter, Lizzy, to Science City in Kansas City, Missouri. I had always thought of Science City as a place for older kids, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun Lizzy had and how many toddler-friendly activities there were to enjoy.

Our adventure began with a stroll through Crown Center and a walk along the Link to Union Station. I was relieved to discover the Let's Play section, specifically designed for children aged 3 and younger. Lizzy's eyes lit up as soon as we entered. One of her favorite activities was playing with scarves that floated in the air. She loved watching them dance around her and then occasionally hitting her in the face!

Next, we explored an interactive section with balls and tubes. Lizzy quickly figured out that she needed to pull a handle to make the balls move through the tubes. She also loved navigating through a playground obstacle course, conquering each challenge with determination and joy. But perhaps her favorite part of Let's Play was the marble wall. She spent ages spinning the marbles and fascinated by the swirling colors and sounds.

As we ventured into Nature Works, Lizzy's curiosity was piqued by the diverse array of animals on display. She eagerly pointed out a fish that resembled Dory from "Finding Nemo" and made fast friends with a turtle. Exiting the exhibits, we encountered a T-rex on a large screen TV, which momentarily confused Lizzy as she tried to understand why she could see us on the screen but not the dinosaur beside her—a delightful moment of toddler bewilderment.

Wrapping up our day, we dined at Fritz's railroad restaurant, where Lizzy was enthralled by the overhead trains delivering our food. Watching the trains whiz by added an extra layer of excitement to her meal, especially when accompanied by French fries and stealing sips from my chocolate shake.

Reflecting on our experience, I realized that Science City offered far more than I had anticipated for toddlers like Lizzy. From interactive play areas to animal encounters, there was something to capture her imagination at every turn. It was a day of discovery not just for Lizzy, but for me as well, as I witnessed her joy and wonder.
