I really enjoy doing crafts and trying out different crafts. Now how might this pertain what I normally write for this blog? It falls into the travel category because there’s a conference called Pinners that has events in Kansas, Texas, Georgia, Idaho, California, Utah, and Arizona. I have been to Kansas (twice) and Texas (once).
Pinners is a conference that features 100+ creative and informative classes taught by the crafters themselves. It is also a show where around 200 businesses provide DIY, crafts, cooking, self-improvement, beauty and fashion.
The one in Kansas is located in the Overland Park Convention Center. My first one I bought the ticket option to do ALL the classes during the day (that’s 6 classes). I registered for the classes, but realize, with just 30 minutes between each class, I didn’t have enough time to explore the expo where there are make-and-take stations. The two classes I did that were probably my favorite were the Welcome to Watercolor and the hand-knit blanket. I paint with acrylic paints and wanted to try out watercolor, but was always too unsure where to begin. The class was really great and we got watercolor paper, brush, fine liner, and of course a pallet of watercolor paints. We painted a pear. Since taking that class I have felt a bit more comfortable doing art in watercolor though still prefer acrylic. The hand-knit blanket was fun and when I finished the little lap blanket from the kit, I went and bought more yarn to make a bigger blanket! These two blankets are definitely our cats’ favorite blankets.
The second time I went to a Pinners was when I went to Texas. This one is located in the Will Rogers Memorial Center. I went with my sister-in-law, my (?) aged niece, and friend, Raisa. It was fun showing off this conference to them. Learning from my mistake I got the ticket option that was for only 2 classes. My sister-in-law and niece both took the classes with me Intro to Round Weaving, and Crafting with UV Resin 101. Raisa only had a general ticket, but was able to do a lot of looking around and make-and-takes while we were in class. While we were in one class Raisa, was able to do an acrylic painting class something which wasn’t an option at my first Pinners.
The third time at Pinners I was back in Kansas. I registered for Embroidery and Fabric Wood Art. The embroidery class was a bit challenging, but my tablemate was also a beginner and we were cheering each other on and having fun learning a new craft. I got to the conference early enough I was able to do a few different make-and-takes. My favorite in the morning was Sublimation. This is where we transfer a special paper (sublimation paper) onto a tumbler. There were three of us sitting next to each other listening to the guy tell use how to wrap and tape this paper with a design onto a tumbler. Once it was all taped up, they put it in the oven for a few minutes. Then after it is out and cooled enough, you un-tape and see the finish project. The other project I did was a textured geode art piece. It was very easy just glue, some paint, and mica. Mica is a thin rock.
Every time I have gone to Pinners I come back with unique crafts. The event is always super fun and just enough of a challenge when flexing that creative muscle. Will I be back? Obviously YES!!
