A small rural town in southwestern Iowa that has a house seeping with paranormal activity. Many paranormal enthusiasts will instantly think of the Villisca Axe Murder House. However, a little over 38 miles away from Villisca is another location not as widely known called Malvern Manor. My paranormal investigation partner, Amber, and I took a mini-vacation up to Malvern, Iowa in August 2019.
Malvern Manor was built in the late nineteenth century and was originally a hotel. It was relatively successful due to the proximity of the railroad. However, because of the rise of automobiles, the hotel was later converted into a group home that treated patients with things such as alcoholism to schizophrenia. There are some allegations that the patients of this facility were abused by their caretakers. While no hard evidence exists of such allegations, Amber and I did see blood splatter on the walls of the hallway on the second floor.
Amber and I did the ghost tour of the property on our Nebraska-Iowa Haunting Adventure, which included stops such as Museum of Shadows and Villisca Axe Murder House. We were unprepared for this tour and what we were about to experience. We were given the history about the manor as well as various paranormal happenings in different locations.
As we toured the manor, we were told about a room called “Gracie’s room.” The tour guide told us that the lady, Grace, was a patient. When we were in the room we talked about the history. Later we walked back to the room, and it smelled like someone peed in it. The tour guide told us that is a normal occurrence of when Grace is present in the room. Amber and I were shocked that when we were in the room previously that there was no smell then coming back awhile later it reeked. We would visit the room afterwards and the smell was gone.
Amber and I also looked down what is deemed the “shadowman hallway.” It gives off quite an eerie vibe. We heard noises down there and tried to figure out how to debunk it, but there was no one else on that side of the building.
We later ventured upstairs to a room that had many coloring books. It is said that if you sit there and are quiet you might get visited by Susie. We did feel like we weren’t alone, but had no equipment with us for this tour to record any findings.
Amber and I definitely want to go back with our equipment to see if we can catch more evidence. Especially now that we have gotten more experienced in doing paranormal investigations as we go to more and more places.
